The Pros Of DIY Wedding Florals

DIY-ing your wedding florals may seem like a good way to save money and make your wedding day extra personalized. If you’re creative you might think that you would enjoy working on your own wedding flowers and making everything DIY. It looks easy and simple, like a fun way to spend your prep time before a wedding. But before you decide to make this decision for your own wedding, read my story…

The Challenges Of DIY Wedding Florals

If you’re thinking of taking on the task of arranging your own wedding florals, think again. I’m here to show you why, based on my own personal experience, it’s better to leave this task to a professional. As someone who has attempted to DIY her wedding florals in the past, I can say it was a huge mistake.

Working with flowers can be far more difficult than you might think, you need to know how to arrange the flowers and make sure the florals look the way you want them to, which can be difficult if you’re not familiar with floral design. And as you’re arranging the flowers, you need to judge if the overall look is what you envisioned. It can be a very time-consuming process and if you don’t get it right the first time…

My Personal Experience With DIY-Ing My Wedding Florals

When I decided to DIY my wedding florals, 7 years ago (before I became a florist) I was convinced I could pull it off. After all, I was a creative person and had lots of experience with DIY projects, so I was sure I could make it work. I didn’t know any of the flower names, so I just walked into a floral department and picked out ones that they had in stock. I planned on getting my makeup & hair done and then quickly putting together the bouquets before we left for the venue.

I had no idea how time-consuming creating bouquets really was! About 30 minutes in I realized I had no idea how to put the flowers that I had into the bouquet shape that I liked based on my inspo photos. Not only that but I didn’t have any proper tools for cutting different stem thicknesses. I quickly learned that arranging the flowers was a lot more complicated than I had anticipated. Not only did my wedding florals look nothing like the pictures I had seen online, but they were also taking forever

Fast forward to 2 hours later as my mom and dad stood in the kitchen watching me agonizing over the shapes of the bouquets. I was so stressed and by the time I finally decided the bouquets were good enough I was running late to my own wedding!

What I Learned From My Mistake

I did save some money by not hiring a professional florist, but I regretted the stress of dealing with wedding florals on my wedding day so very much. This was a day that was supposed to be full of love & magic not stress and pressure. I also learned that dealing with flowers is much harder and more time-consuming than I imagined. It’s too bad I was not destined to become a wedding florist myself for another 5 years after my wedding!

Why Professionals Are Better Equipped To Handle Wedding Florals

When I decided to opt for DIY wedding flowers, I thought I was doing myself a favor by saving money. But in reality, I was in way over my head. After searching for the perfect flowers, and spending hours in my kitchen trying to arrange the bouquets, I realized that I was not equipped with the skills and knowledge to create the exact look I was hoping for.

Florists are much better at knowing which flowers would best suit the bride’s style & inspiration photos, not to mention how to make those flowers happy–as I learned later on, each flower variety has its own likes & dislikes, strengths & weaknesses and needs to be handled accordingly. Florists also know which vessels designs are best suited for the venue and how to transport all the florals to the ceremony/reception without having a huge mess in the car or needing to fix sad, wilted blooms.

My Advice To DIY-Ers: Leave It To The Pros!

When it comes to your wedding day, the last thing you want to be worrying about is whether or not your flowers will look good. I know, because I tried to DIY my own wedding florals – and it did not turn out well!

My experience with DIY-ing my wedding florals 7 years ago, was eye-opening, to say the least. I quickly realized that it is much better to leave this task to the professionals, who are able to create exactly what you are hoping for and save you time and energy in the process. From sourcing the materials, to creating the arrangements and making sure they look the way you want, it is a lot of work. By choosing to have a professional take on this task, you can have peace of mind that your wedding florals will be perfect and just like your wedding vision!
